How many times have you thought of owning and riding a VW trike? A machine that stops people in their tracks. I had that thought.
It took a few months, a bit of determination, some dirt on my hands, but it’s finished. And it cost a fraction of a commercially produced trike. Phil Parry is my name and I’m a Technical Illustrator/Mech. Design Draftsman. After replacing the engine in my daughters ’65 VW Beetle, I pondered what to do with the old *VW 1200 engine sitting on my garage floor. “A VW trike I’ll build” thought I……so I did. After a great deal of designing and problem solving, using only basic tools at home, I built Big Yella totally unassisited. The project involved frame construction, front-end design, hydraulics, fibre-glassing, painting, electrics, an engine rebuild, wrought iron and wood work, but finally the transformation of an old VW Beetle into a stunning VW trike was completed. Anyhow, browse through the site and enjoy the pics. Maybe you’ll be inspired to build your own custom trike. There are as many challenges in building your own VW Trike as there are variations in design. I have produced a DVD based on my own personal experiences in the hope that you will avoid some of the unforeseen problems that would otherwise cost you construction time and possibly money to remedy the situation
